Trading is one of the most lucrative professions in Elite Dangerous , providing you know how to get started. Shuffling cargo, transporting illegal items via smuggling, and data transport missions are great ways to get started, and missions are offered at pretty much every station you come across. RELATED: Elite Dangerous: Best Passenger Ships.

At the beginning of the game, having a ship with enough cargo space for high-value missions is your biggest challenge. It’s a slow process of grinding your way through the Federation and Imperial ranks, earning credits to upgrade your ship, and getting a better understanding of the best trade routes and missions available to you.

Here’s what you need to know about trading in Elite Dangerous. The economy of Elite Dangerous is based on player activity, constantly changing and evolving. Goods can go up and down in price overnight. A successful trader will study the economy and move cargo around accordingly. The profession of „Trader“ actually encompasses many different ways to play Elite Dangerous; whether you want to be a Miner, selling your ore for profit, a Passenger Carrier, making money from delivering passengers from point A to point B, or taking the more illicit route of selling illegal items on the Black Market.

For a brand new player, however, this is all a bit overwhelming. Thankfully, there are simple starter trader missions for Courier and Data cargo that can be completed in one of the starter ships, like your trusty Sidewinder, which require little cargo capacity.

For Commanders wanting to explore all that Elite Dangerous has to offer, trading is a great way to take a break from combat or exploration. It’s also a fun way to begin financial preparations for the Odyssey DLC’s imminent release. Trading is also a great way to increase a Commander’s Federation and Imperial rank, granting access to ships like the Corvette, Imperial Eagle, and the Cutter the most versatile ship in the game. There’s not much to learn to get started trading, though there are several things to consider when starting a trade mission or route.

This guide will go over what a Commander needs to know to make the most amount of credits, or other desired rewards, in the most efficient manner possible. There’s a way to start trading at any level of wealth in Elite Dangerous, with trading missions offered at a significant number of stations.

For Commanders looking to trade but lacking a higher cargo capacity, Courier and Data Transfer missions will provide Commanders with some credits and reputation, with the added benefit of taking no cargo space. This means a Commander can take up to 20 of these missions without hindering Jump Range or handling.

Once a Freighter ship is acquired, Commanders can take missions or find their own trading route and explore the galaxy!

Ranks are earned by successfully completing various activities in Elite Dangerous. There are six different rank categories overseen by the Pilots Federation , which trains, licenses, and monitors all independent pilots in the galaxy. The Federal Navy and Imperial Navy both offer ranks of their own for completing missions that support them.

The Pilots Federation ranks all pilots in the galaxy on a scale from Harmless to Elite. A pilot’s rank can be improved through trade , exploration , combat , and CQC. All players are licensed members of the Pilots Federation and will earn progress towards ranks by completing activities related to each of the four categories. Players who earn the rank of Elite in Combat, Trader, and Explorer attain the coveted status of „Triple Elite“.

CQC ranks are considered a separate category. Combat ranks are earned through combat-related activities, such as destroying other ships and skimmers , collecting and turning in Bounty Vouchers , and completing missions that involve combat. Trader ranks are earned through trade-related activities, such as amassing credits through buying and selling commodities for a profit, transporting passengers in bulk , and mining and selling raw resources.

This reputation defaults to 0, and can go both above and below zero depending on your reputation. Your reputation will affect the cost of certain station services, and some stations won’t even let you dock if your reputation is not appropriate!
