Verdi wrote the Messa da Requiem to the memory of his revered compatriot, Alessandro Manzoni. It was first heard in , a year to the day after Manzoni’s death. The Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi is a musical setting of the Roman Catholic funeral Mass called the Requiem from the first word of the text, which begins Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, meaning, „Grant them eternal rest, O Lord“—see the entry at “ Dies Irae „.

It was first performed on 22 May to mark the first anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni , an Italian poet and novelist much admired by Verdi. The piece is also sometimes referred to as the Manzoni Requiem. The Requiem is scored for a quartet of solo singers soprano , mezzo-soprano , tenor and bass , double chorus and a large orchestra consisting of three flutes third flute doubling on piccolo , two oboes , two clarinets , four bassoons , four horns , eight trumpets four of which play from offstage during the Tuba mirum , three trombones , one ophicleide an obsolete instrument usually replaced by a tuba in modern performances , timpani , bass drum , and strings.

When Gioachino Rossini died in , Verdi suggested that a number of Italian composers should collaborate on a Requiem in Rossini’s honor, and began the effort by submitting a „Libera me. The premiere was scheduled for 13 November , the first anniversary of Rossini’s death. However, on 4 November, nine days before the premiere, the organising committee abandoned it. Verdi blamed the scheduled conductor, Angelo Mariani , for this.

He pointed to Mariani’s lack of enthusiasm for the project, even though he had been part of the organising committee from the start, and it marked the beginning of the end of their long-term friendship. Verdi never forgave Mariani, although Mariani pleaded with him.

Celebrated conductor Lorin Maazel, a young orchestra of outstanding musicians, four high-caliber soloists and one of the great choral works of musical literature – this alone would make this live recording of Verdi’s Requiem a stand-out document of filmed music. But there is more: the venue of this grandiose performance, the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, with its shimmering golden Byzantine mosaics framed by mighty pillars and arches.

Modeled on Constantine the Great’s Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople, the 11th-century basilica has been the workplace of many a great musician in the past, such as Claudio Monteverdi, Adrian Willaert and Giovanni Gabrieli. Lorin Maazel founded the young orchestra „Symphonica Toscanini“ in May This recording features distinguished soloists Norma Fantini soprano , Anna Smirnova mezzo-soprano , Francesco Meli tenor , Rafal Siwek bass.

The Chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino supplies a masterfully nuanced vocal support. Production Year:. Age rating:. Audio Language:. Subtitle Language:. Basilica di San Marco.

I seem to recall hearing that there was a recording from the nineties with a British conductor that won „golden opinions,“ and also there have been some interesting historically informed performances from fairly recently. Kay because I like the blend of the soloists when they’re all singing at the same time, as in parts of the Offertorio.

The Verdi Requiem is one of those awe-inspiring works that rarely gets a performance matching its greatness. The problems with this release are plentiful. Another is the soloists, a starry bunch who never sound vocally comfortable. The chorus does what Muti asks it to do, which testifies to its considerable skill, but a larger group is necessary for this work. Finally, the sound is awful. The digital transfer dates from and should have been remastered.

Pianissimos are barely audible and fortes are congested at normal listening levels. Kick the volume up enough to hear the quiet passages and the louder ones will pin you to the back wall. There are just too many good versions available of this Requiem, satisfying every interpretive preference, for this one to be competitive.

But will someone please reissue the Markevitch from Moscow, once available as a Philips LP set?
