Disentangling Demand-enhancing and Trade Cost Effects of Maximum Residue Regulations Bo Xiong and John Beghin Maximum residue level MRL regulations in plant products can create unnecessary trade barriers on one hand and enhance demand via risk mitigation or quality assurance on the other. We stipulate a generalized gravity equation model to disentangle the effects of MRLs on the import demand and foreign exporters‘ supply.
Applying the framework to the MRLs on pesticides imposed by high-income Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries, we find that the MRLs jointly enhance the import demand and hinder foreign exporters‘ supply. In addition, exporters from the less and least developed countries are more constrained by the MRLs than their competitors from the developed world.
New Demand for Old Food: the U. Demand for Olive Oil Bo Xiong, William Matthews, Daniel Sumner U. Estimating Gravity Equation Models in the Presence of Sample Selection and Heteroskedasticity Bo Xiong and Sixia Chen Gravity models are widely used to explain patterns of trade. However, two stylized features of trade data, sample selection and heteroskedasticity, challenge the estimation of gravity models.

The Collaborative Master of Science in Agricultural and Applied Economics CMAAE builds capacity to conduct policy research in agricultural and applied economics to address food security, agricultural productivity and environmental management. In the first year of study, students are required to complete eight core courses and one common course in Institutional and Behavioral Economics all scheduled for semesters 1 and 2. Semester 1 weeks : Microeconomics, Statistics, Mathematics, and Issues in Agricultural and Applied Economics.
Semester 2 weeks : Production Economics, Econometrics, Macro-economics, Research Methods, Computer Applications and Institutional and Behavioral Economics. During the third semester covering four months August — November , students from all the accredited universities converge at a Shared Facility for Specialization and Electives SFSE for teaching of foundation and elective courses by visiting professors drawn from all over the world.
In addition, students take one common course and at least one elective course in the specific cluster or area of specialization. The approved CMAAE elective courses from which selections are made are listed below. Over the years, SFSE has been held at the University of Pretoria UP in South Africa. This is based on the fact that UP has a world class facility with an environment that is conducive for learning.
The last part of the course involves thesis research. This process starts at the SFSE where students present their concept notes during weekly seminar sessions.

IIASA models, tools, and data are developed in collaboration with partners to tackle challenges at global, regional, national, and sub-national levels. Climate Change and International Agricultural Trade in the Aftermath of COP IIASA scientists provide a key note on Climate Mitigation, Global Agriculture and Food Security at the Annual Meeting of the IATRC, which aims to facilitate the interchange of ideas among academic, government, and business researchers.
The Annual Meeting is attended my academics, civil servants and researchers working in the private sector and provides an opportunity to report on-going research, and to discuss research priorities and plans. At each meeting, a Theme Day is devoted to a single topic which may be a policy issue, an area of research, or a research methodology.
The presentation will communicate the results of recent projects funded by, among others, CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security CCAFS and carried out by the Ecosystems Services and Management Program. The research highlights that a carbon tax implemented in the agricultural sector could be more detrimental to food availability than the climate change itself, without the tax revenues being properly re-distributed to foster innovation in the sector and enhance safety nets for the poorest.
The research also sought to identify priorities and strategies for mitigating the climate change impacts of agriculture by using integrated assessment modelling GLOBIOM and scenarios. Petr Havlik.
