So you can imagine how glad I was to be in a new world with a completely different atmosphere and environment. As an international student, my expectations of college were very high. Not only would I be dealing with a foreign culture, country, and language, but also an educational system very different from the one in my home country.
My time at ETH Zurich opened a whole new experience for me, presenting countless opportunities for self-improvement as I tackled challenges and achieved goals. On the other hand, the pandemic which shook the world severely affected my studies. I felt surprised and frightened when I read the email from the Rector of ETH Zurich announcing that classroom teaching was suspended; on 16 March everything would go online and staying at home was a must.
I started to schedule activities during the day to keep me active while enjoying what I like to do most — study and enjoy nature. But those tough times showed me how to be resilient and optimistic when thinking about the future and finding alternatives. The ETH Zoom platform for our online class was outstanding: I was able to interact with my classmates, and this turned out to be the favourite part of my day, and the most fruitful. I also tried to embrace the idea of staying at home, as this gave me more time for research and improving my cooking skills.
The hospitality of the Swiss people and interaction with them were great.

There is no Nobel Prize offered for geoscience. Alfred Nobel himself intended that honor exclusively for physics, chemistry, medicine, peace, and literature. And though there exist a number of respectable awards for geoscientists from a variety of societies and institutions, it is obvious that with regard to prestige, financial benefit, and global admiration there is no true substitute to the Nobel.
A few awards do, however, come close in their attempt to praise the accomplishments of uniquely influential figures within our science.

The Chair of Hydrology and Water Resources Management has been established in January , by appointment of its present holder Prof. Paolo Burlando. He was joined by Prof. Peter Molnar as adjunct professor in The Chair focuses on teaching and research activities in the field of surface water hydrology and water resources analysis, planning and management. Key activities are the analysis and modelling of hydrological processes, their space-time variability, and their interactions with the landscape, with the aim of providing the basis for modern water resources assessment and sustainable planning and management.
Read more. Hotter summers dry Alpine rivers. Research on ecohydrology in the Chair led by Dr Simone Fatichi has shown that increases in water consumption from vegetation green water is at the expense of streamflow in rivers blue water during hot summers like the European Alps heatwave and drought, highlighting underappreciated vulnerability of blue water resources to future warmer summers.
Such a finding has implications for vegetation functioning and water resource management of mountainous regions. Mastrotheodoros, T.
